DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF A SPANISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM BASED ON STANDARDS OF LEARNING IN THE STATE OF VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES

The evidence supporting the improvement of the acquisition of Spanish as a Foreign Language through ELE curricula based on standards of learning is important, as is the case of Dr. Weterberg’s book (2016) Charting a Course to Standard Base Grading. Also, the Common European Framework of reference for language learning is, without a doubt, the fundamental instrument for the development of ELE worldwide. It is important to emphasize that the standards of learning must consist of long and short term goals, and that in turn, these goals serve as a guide for the development of the language in students. Taking this into account, we decided to study if there truly existed differences between the traditional curriculum and one based on the standards of learning. Therefore, in this study, we present the results of this experimental investigation in which the outcomes of each curriculum in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language in the state of Virginia (United States) are compared. The results show that the level of learning achieved by the students that received instruction following the second model is greater than the traditional one. Therefore, we provide an example of each model to demonstrate the differences and similarities among them.
