DIMINUTIVES IN SPEAKING SPANISH LEARNERS
The aim of this article is to analyze the use of diminutive suffixes among the learners of Spanish as a foreign language in order to discuss the development of their pragmatic competence. For this purpose, the occurrences of the suffix -ito among the Spanish learners from level A1 to C1, native speakers of Arabic, Chinese-Mandarin, English, French, Portuguese and Russian, gathered in the CAES (Corpus of learners of Spanish as a foreign language). In addition to the CAES analysis, the diminutive analysis is exposed in different sociolinguistic corpus (of native speakers) of the PRESEEA (Project for the sociolinguistic study of Spanish in Spain and America). In the first sections of the article we discuss the treatment of diminutive suffixation in ELE grammars as well as different research on diminutives in the teaching of Spanish. The analysis of the CAES shows a low use of the suffix -ito among all the apprentices as an indicator of a learning process in which this pragmatic strategy is not sufficiently addressed.
